Medal tally after Golden Sunday at Asian Games

ATHLETICS IS where we shined on Sunday, with two gold medals and a silver, all in women’s category. Sudha Singh and Preeja Sreedharan both won a gold medal each in Women’s 3000m Steplechase and omen’s 10,000m events respectively. Whereas, Kavita Raut brought a silver in Women’s 10,000m event.

Ronjan Sodhi became our shooting star by grabbing a gold in men’s double trap shooting event. India was earlier pretty disappointed with the shooting events, Ronjan Sodhi became the answer to all prayers.

Indian wrestlers Ravinder Singh and Sunil Kumar Rana clinched bronze medals in their respective weight categories in the Greco-Roman style on Sunday. Two more bronze came our way in the shooting event of men’s double trap team event and women’s singles tennis event.
Sania lost to Uzbekistan's Amanmur in the singles event of tennis and got  a bronze for the same in quarterfinals.
The trio of Deepika Kumari, a gold medal winner in last month’s Commonwealth Games, Dola Banerjee and Rimil Buriuly lost the tense semifinal shootout to the Koreans 26-29  and won a bronze in the women’s team event.
All these medals above total up to 9 medals bringing the total number to 33. India stands at an appreciative 8th rank at the Asian Games 2010.
It is interesting to note that in the last Asian Games, 2006 held at Doha, India finished at the eighth position with a total of 53 medals.   Still 6 days to go, there is hope alive that we will finish better than the last games here in Guangzhou.
