Railway Budget 2011 highlights

RAILWAY MINISTER Mamata Banerjee is delivering the Rail Budget in the Lok Sabha in her characteristic style not in any way unnerved by the huge din and cry being made by the opposition members. Repeatedly the Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar had to make interventions to calm the opposition members, even as the Rail Minister angrily asked the MPs to keep quite and listen.

Here is a list of proposals made by the Railway Minister as part of her Railway Budget 2011.

Railways will construct 10,000 shelters for people staying next to lines
It will meet the demand for coaches, rail based industries to be set up under Vision 2020
First coach from the new rail factory at Rae Bareli to roll out in next three months
It will set up two wagon units with private partners
It will set up track machine unit in West Bengal
It will construct 700 km rail track each year

It has received 85 proposals under PPP scheme

It will set up 700 megawatt gas based power plant in Maharashtra

It will set up rail industrial park in Nandigram

It will set up railway software unit in Darjeeling
It will set up diesel locomotive works in Manipur
It will set up one metro coach factory in Singur
It will set up a bridge factory in Jammu and Kashmir
It will absorb 16,000 ex-servicemen to be inducted by Railways
The Railways has cancelled 1,500 trains, 3,500 re-scheduled last year
It will set up two new passenger terminals in Kerala
It will ensure better accessibility of stations to physically challenged
It will provide 12000 acres to east-west freight corridor
Pradhan Mantri Rail Vikas Yojna to be launched
Safety first priority; accident rate has come down
Work on wagon factory in Orissa to begin after land is acquired
It will do do away with all unmanned railway crossings by next year

Anti collision devices have been deployed in 8 zones
Anti collision devices to be commissioned in 3 zones
It will spend Rs 9583 crore on new lines in FY 12
