In a breather to telecom operators ,Union government allowed carriage of video calls, revoking the ban on video call services on 3G mobile services, subject to an undertaking by the operators of their interception capability by July 31, 2011.
The operators have to develop the technical capabilities and offer the same for testing in advance so that the testing process is completed.RCom pleased to get this clearance from the DoT for which the company has been waiting for the past two months.
Earlier, the operators had objected to the ban imposed by the Union Government on grounds that their investments billions of dollars were at stake. The operators had also expressed their technical inability to give access to video calls on a real time basis to the law enforcement agencies.
The 3G service includes voice call, video calls and data services.Tata and Reliance Communications have already launched the 3G service across various circles, while others are likely to start the service soon.
The DoT and the Home Ministry were working together to place rules and norms for intercepting or monitoring of the 3G transactions in the interest of national security.
