THE BIGGEST cricketing tournament of the world, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 has reached a crucial stage and it is time to cheer for Dhoni and his brigade, not to criticise them. A number of news channels, in the hunt for more TRPs, are continuously berating the Indian team after carrying out the autopsy of the Indian defeat against South Africans.
During a panel discussion on a leading news channel, panelists were calculating the chances and possibilities of the Indian team find a berth for the quarterfinals based on hypothetical equations. However, according to the present situation Indian team is almost confirmed for the quarterfinals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
A common question being asked is: why Dhoni preferred Nehra over Harbhajan for the last over of the inning? According to the legendery cricketer Imran Khan, at that stage even Harbhajan couldn't stop them to chase the required runs.
I recall the final of 2007 ICC World T20 championship, where India won the tournament beating Pakistan in the final. In the final over of that match, Dhoni preferred Joginder Sharma over Harbhajan Singh, and India won the tournament.
At that time every news channel appreciated the decision of Dhoni. Had Sharma failed every one would have cursed the Indian captain.
In the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup, the Indian team has played well. In the inaugural match, India scored 370 runs and picked nine Bangladesh wickets. In the next match against England, the Indian team tied the match after pulling themslevs out from the jaws of sure shot defeat. Indians scored 338 and picked eight English wickets.
In the third match against Ireland, Indian team restricted them for 207 runs in 47.5 overs, and won by five wickets. In the fourth match Indian bowlers bowled Netherlands for 189 runs in 46.4 overs and again won by five wickets. In the last match against South Africa, the Indian team scored 296 runs and lost in a close finish.
So media should take a balanced view, and end the diatribe against the men in blue. Indians are praying for the Indian team to win the world cup after 28 years. Good luck to Dhoni and his band of brothers.
